In conjunction with World Mental Health Day, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) hosted a Counselling Talk titled "Managing Stress and Burnout in Academia." The event, organised by the Counselling Unit of the Office of Student Affairs, took place in the Training Room of the UTB Library Complex. Its primary goal was to offer crucial support and guidance to students and staff dealing with mental health issues.
The talk highlighted the vital role of mental health in academic achievement and stressed the importance of fostering practices that promote emotional well-being. UTB used this opportunity to create a supportive environment for its academic community, acknowledging that neglecting mental health can adversely affect individuals.
Yang Mulia 'Ainan Syafeeqah Muhammad Saifullah, a psychologist from the Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health, led the session. She provided insights into various mental health challenges common in academia, particularly stress and burnout. The discussion aimed to raise awareness about seeking help and offered practical advice on stress management and maintaining emotional health.
Following the talk, a question and answer session allowed participants to gain valuable strategies for coping with stress, understanding burnout's impact, and exploring ways to achieve a more balanced academic life.
The Counselling Unit also announced a series of activities planned for Mental Health Awareness Month, running from 10 October to 4 November, 2024. This campaign will begin with a focus on awareness-building in the first week, followed by interactive workshops, community engagement initiatives, and the provision of ongoing support resources.
