In light of the current pandemic, the opening ceremony for the 4th International Conference on Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (CIIS) 2020 was officiated virtually by Yang Mulia Awang Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications as the Guest of Honour.

The conference organised by the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is held for three days that started on 25 January 2021.

The virtual opening ceremony began with welcoming remarks by Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB, and a speech by Yang Mulia Professor Emeritus Tamon Ueda, Chief Advisor of AUN/SEED-Net. The Guest of Honour also gave a speech and later officiated the opening of the CIIS 2020.

Following the opening ceremony, two keynote papers were presented by Yang Mulia Professor Kazuhiko Hamamoto from Tokai University, Japan entitled ‘Virtual Reality on Biomedical Engineering’. Meanwhile, Yang Mulia Professor Kenji Araki from Hokkaido University, Japan presented on ‘Laughing Computer – Automation Generation of Funny Humor Superior to Human Beings’.

The CIIS conference also featured two invited international speakers who shared their perspectives on 5G. Yang Mulia Dr Afif Osseiran from Ericsson Stockholm presented on ‘5G and Beyond – The state of the art’, while Yang Mulia Dr Kisuk Kweon from Samsung Corporation delivered a talk entitled ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 5G system’.

This year, the keynote speakers and the invited guest speakers are sponsored by the ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/Seed-Net) Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); and Brunei Darussalam 5G Taskforce, Authority for Info-communication Technology Industry (AITI) respectively. The conference also received sponsorship from Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), Datastream Digital Sdn Bhd (DST), TechOne Global Brunei, Sprintville Technologies Sdn Bhd, and AP Solution.

CIIS 2020 aims to bring together expertise and professionals from academia and industry to interact and share their experience and knowledge in the recent technological advancements in the field of Computing and Information Systems. The conference looks for significant contributions to all major fields of the Computing and Information Systems in theoretical and practical aspects. The three-day conference also holds pre-conference workshop, keynote addresses, paper presentations and poster competition.

Carrying the theme Digital Innovation towards Sustainable Development Goals, the topics presented by the participants reflected their recent research work on the areas of Application of Intelligent Information System, Application of Networking and Information Security, Advancement of Digital Innovation and Theoretical foundations of Digital Innovation.

A total of 55 submissions from various international countries including Japan, Bulgaria, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Thailand to name a few were received this year. After a rigorous review process, 23 papers were accepted to be presented in the conference and included in the proceedings of CIIS 2020, which is published by Springer in the Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing book series.
