Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in collaboration with the ASEAN Diplomatic Missions in Bandar Seri Begawan, launched the ASEAN Traditional Textile Exhibition, a milestone event dedicated to showcasing the diverse and intricate textile traditions of Southeast Asia. Held at UTB’s Multipurpose Hall, this exhibition marks a significant milestone in promoting cultural heritage and fostering regional unity.
Organised in conjunction with ASEAN Month 2024, the exhibition of traditional textiles serves as more than just artistic expressions; it is a vital link to the cultural identity, history, and community. Each thread and pattern reflects the vibrant traditions and diverse histories of the ASEAN countries. The exhibition aims to celebrate this exquisite craftsmanship and emphasize the cultural significance of traditional textiles, reinforcing the interconnectedness of the region’s diverse cultures.
The exhibition's opening ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat. Yang Mulia Dr. Fadzliwati binti Mohiddin, Dean of the UTB School of Business, then delivered a welcoming address.
The exhibition was officially launched by Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB. Following the launch, the Guest of Honour visited the exhibition, exploring the carefully curated displays which highlights the intricate craftsmanship and cultural narratives behind each textile exhibit.
Also in attendance were the special guests from embassies and high commissions of all ASEAN countries and Timor Leste.
The ASEAN Textile Exhibition features contributions from the ASEAN Member State and Timor-Leste. Through digital displays, info-posters, and a captivating film presentation, the exhibition offers a comprehensive exploration of each country’s textile traditions, techniques, and cultural stories.
The exhibition's theme, "Threads of Culture: Unraveling ASEAN Textile Tales for Young Minds," serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting traditional weaving techniques. It also provides a unique opportunity for skilled artisans to showcase their expertise, share their cultural heritage, and engage in cross-cultural exchanges.
The ASEAN Textile Exhibition is open to the public from 22 until 24 August 2024, at 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Visitors are encouraged to explore the diverse exhibits and immerse themselves in the rich cultural narratives that define ASEAN’s textile heritage.
