> Nurturing Resilience and Well-Being: UTB Promotes Holistic Student Development Through Mental Health Week 2026

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) reinforced its commitment to student well-being and holistic development through the opening of UTB Mental Health Week 2026 on 17 October and the organisation of UTB Healing Day Vol. 2 on 19 October, bringing together students, staff, alumni and members of the public to promote mental wellness, resilience and meaningful social engagement.

Organised through a collaboration between UTB’s Counselling Unit, Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar UTB (MPPUTB), and various student-led organisations and schools, UTB Mental Health Week 2026 was held in conjunction with the 11th UTB Pesta Konvo 2026. The initiative highlighted the importance of mental well-being as an integral part of academic success, personal growth and the development of future-ready graduates.

The programme commenced on 17 October with a forum titled “Beyond the Smile: The Silent Struggles We Carry” at Lecture Theatre 3. Moderated by Yang Mulia Dayang Nurfarah Aliaa Hj Suhaimi, the forum featured a panel comprising Yang Mulia Leftenan (B) Awang Diny Haji Karim, President of PEKA Brunei Darussalam; Yang Mulia Dayang Irnawati Haji Mahir, Head of Human Resource and Training, Department of Youth and Sports; Yang Mulia Dayang Siti Zubaidah Haji Nor Hisham, an internationally certified Mental Health First Aider; and Yang Mulia Awang Hakim Iskandar, cancer survivor, life coach and mental health advocate from the Joint Initiative for the Wellbeing of All (JIWA.BN).

The panellists shared personal experiences and professional insights on overcoming adversity, managing emotional well-being and building resilience. The discussion also highlighted the importance of empathy, open conversations about mental health and supportive communities that encourage individuals to seek assistance when needed.

The opening day continued at the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) with “Art for the Heart”, a performance that showcased creativity as a means of self-expression and emotional well-being. Through artistic and cultural presentations, participants conveyed messages of hope, healing, resilience and self-discovery, reinforcing the role of creative expression in promoting positive mental health.

On 19 October, UTB Healing Day Vol. 2 brought the university community and members of the public together at the MPH for a day of relaxation, recreation and social interaction. Designed to provide a welcoming space for participants to unwind from academic and daily pressures, the event encouraged self-care, mindfulness and meaningful connections beyond the classroom.

Participants enjoyed a range of activities, including BINGO sessions, mini games, video gaming stations, ATV and BECA rides, as well as food and beverage offerings. Attendees were also encouraged to bring their own picnic arrangements, contributing to a relaxed atmosphere that fostered community bonding and peer support.

The event featured live performances by several UTB student clubs, including the UTB Gulintangan Club, UTB Music Club, UTB Hanwoori, UTB Dance Club and UTB Japanese Culture Club. These performances showcased students’ artistic talents and cultural diversity while highlighting the contribution of extracurricular activities to personal development and campus life.

Together, the two programmes demonstrated UTB’s holistic approach to education, recognising that student development extends beyond academic and professional competencies. By providing opportunities for mental health awareness, creative expression, recreation and social engagement, the University encouraged the development of emotional intelligence, healthy coping strategies and resilience among its community.

UTB Mental Health Week 2026 formed part of the University’s continued efforts to cultivate a supportive and inclusive campus environment where well-being is recognised as an essential component of learning, leadership and lifelong development. The initiative also reflected UTB’s broader commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates equipped to navigate challenges, contribute positively to society and support Brunei Darussalam’s continued development.
