As part of the High Commission of Canada in Brunei Darussalam efforts to enrich the literary contribution of the academic community in the Sultanate, while strengthening ties between the High Commission and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Le Coin Canadien (The Canadian Corner) was launched at the UTB Library.
Present to hand over the donation of books was the High Commissioner of Canada in Brunei Darussalam, Her Excellency Madam Jeanette Adele Stovel to Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman.
The event began with remarks from the Vice-Chancellor of UTB followed by remarks from the High Commissioner of Canada. The event continued with the launching of Le Coin Canadien.
Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah said the university is pleased to receive the books and hoped it would be well utilised by the university’s students and staff. “I believe the Canadian Corner can contribute in developing our students into global citizens who appreciate cultures, viewpoints and are sensitive to issues affecting the global community,” she said.
She shared that the UTB Library has a collection of over 33,000 volumes of books and a total of 1000 units of media collection, adding that “we invested significantly on acquiring two online databases: Scopus and Science Direct. Science Direct gives our staff and students access to 4,127 journals and 29,106 books as well as enables them to stay up-to-date on the latest high-quality research publications from all over the world.
Also present at the event were the principal officers and staff from UTB and officers from the High Commission of Canada.
Le Coin Canadien houses a collection of forty books donated by the High Commission. The book collection covers diverse topics including Canadian classics, history, poetry and biographies.
The High Commission’s book donation is hoped to act as distinctive additions to the library’s growing Foreign Mission collection as well as to foster the love for reading among UTB community.
