The Centre for Green Technology and Sustainability Research (GreenTeXS) at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), in conjunction with the Faculty of Engineering (FEng) Lecture Series, successfully hosted the GreenTeXS Expert Talk Series titled “AI for Oceans & Nation: Driving Brunei’s Blue and Digital Economy” at Lecture Theatre 4, UTB.
The session featured distinguished speaker Yang Mulia Mohd Tahsin Wong Abdullah, Vice President and Co-Founder of Poni Foundation. The talk was moderated by Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr Lim Tiong Hoo, Director of GreenTeXS.
The session explored the practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing real-world challenges within Brunei’s marine environment and national development landscape. It highlighted how AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and integrated data systems are being utilised to monitor ecosystems, enhance fisheries management, and strengthen marine conservation efforts.
Expanding beyond environmental applications, the talk also demonstrated how these technologies can support government-led digital transformation initiatives. Key areas discussed included improving decision-making processes, enabling smarter infrastructure, and unlocking new opportunities within both the digital and blue economy sectors. The session effectively bridged ocean science with national development strategies, illustrating how AI can contribute to sustainable growth, resilience, and innovation in Brunei.
The talk aimed to expose Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) final year students to real-world applications of AI in marine aquaculture, while also encouraging potential collaborations between UTB academics and the Poni Foundation.
