> EXPANDING ROAD SAFETY RESEARCH BEYOND BOUNDARIES

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Centre of Transport Research (CfTR) of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), organised a joint webinar on Road Safety 2022. The webinar entitled Expanding Road Safety Research Beyond Boundaries was held virtually which aims to identify common issues on road safety and recent Research and Development (R&D) findings in Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and the region to facilitate future joint R&D projects and knowledge exchange.

The webinar began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat followed by webinar introduction by the moderators, TS. Ahmad Noor Syukri Zainal Abidin, Head of Crash Data Operational & Managament Unit, MIROS and Dr. Tan Soon Jiann, Director of CfTR, UTB.

The opening remarks were delivered by Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Dr. Khairil Anwar bin Abu Kassim, Adjunct Professor and the Director General of MIROS; and Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB.

The webinar consists of two sessions and 8 series of presentations on road safety issues which brought together experts from Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia.

The first session was moderated by TS. Ahmad Noor Syukri Zainal Abidin. The chosen topics presented include ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme: History, Current & Future by Assoc. Lt. Col. Ts. Zulhaidi Mohd Jawi, Director, Vehicle Safety & Biomechanics Research Centre MIROS; Applying International Road Assessment Programme Fundamentals in Improving Road Safety by Mr. Alvin Poi Wai Hoong, Senior Researcher, Road Traffic & Infrastructure Unit, Road Safety, Engineering and Environment Research Centre, MIROS; Driving Simulator and Computer-based Applications for High Impact Safe Driving Awareness Programme by Mohd Khairul Alhapiz Ibrahim, Head, Driving Simulation and Psychometric Data Unit, Road User, Behavioural Change Research Centre, MIROS; and Current Development in Borneo: Road Safety Perspective by TS. Dr. Iskandar Abdul Hamid, Senior Researcher, Office of the Director General, MIROS.

Meanwhile, Dr Tan Soon Jian moderated the second session where Dr. Wida Susanty binti Haji Suhaili, Assistant Professor, School of Computing and Informatics, UTB presented on  Road Accident Data Enhancement and Development – A Case Study of Brunei Darusaalam; Dr. El-Said Mamdouh Mahmoud Zahran, Associate Professor, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Ain Shams University, Egypt talked about Spatial Traffic Accident Analysis (STAA); and Dr. Yong Shiaw Yin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam(UBD) spoke about Identifying Driving Patterns at Signalised Junctions to Enhance Traffic Safety. Last but not least, Dr. Sheik Mohammed Sulthan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, UTB concluded the second session with his topic Charging Methods and Safety of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations.

MIROS and UTB, represented by CfTR, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year on 21 May 2021 to establish collaboration and cooperation in the field of road safety. This webinar is one of the initiatives under the MoU which provides a platform for its participants to develop knowledge and understanding on some of the latest R&D findings on contemporary issues on road safety in the region. There were about 100 participants who attended the event this morning.
