10th March 2025 – Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), through the Centre for Research on Agrifood Science and Technology (CrAFT), in collaboration with Fatih Aquaculture and with the support of the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organised a workshop on Aquaculture & Technology. The workshop aimed to highlight the potential of aquaculture in Brunei’s food security and economic diversification while addressing the challenges faced by the industry.
More than 40 participants, including aspiring aquaculture entrepreneurs, representatives from government and non-government agencies, researchers, and students from higher education institutions, attended the event. Among them were representatives from the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and Brunei Innovation Lab (BIL), reflecting the growing interest in leveraging innovation and technology for aquaculture development.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Syazana Abdullah Lim, Director of the Centre for Research on Agrifood Science and Technology (CrAFT). One of the workshop's highlights was a presentation by the Founder of Fatih Aquaculture, Ahmad Fathi bin Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Norarfan, where they shared their inspiring entrepreneurship journey and their experience in pioneering Brunei’s first floating sea-based hatchery. Fatih Aquaculture emphasized the importance of resilience, adaptability, and innovation in building a sustainable aquaculture business and encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to explore the opportunities within the industry.

She highlighted various incentives and support mechanisms available for aspiring aquaculture entrepreneurs and investors, encouraging more stakeholders to participate in the aquaculture sector.
The workshop also emphasized the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology in enhancing aquaculture production. This session, led by Dr. Lim Tiong Hoo, Senior Assistant Professor from the Faculty of Engineering at UTB, demonstrated how AI-driven innovations could revolutionize aquaculture practices.
The workshop concluded with an interactive Question & Answer session, followed by a visit to the Centre for Research on Agrifood Science and Technology. Participants also had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on practical session with AI-powered aquaculture tools such as the AIquatic AquaFeeder, BioSample, and AquaSense, which enable real-time monitoring and data-driven decision- making for aquaculture operations.
This workshop marks a significant step toward promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and encouraging individuals to explore career opportunities in the industry. Both UTB and Fatih Aquaculture recently secured a grant under the UNDP - ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge, further emphasizing their commitment to advancing innovation in aquaculture. CrAFT and its partners remain committed to supporting the growth of Brunei’s aquaculture sector through research, innovation, and industry collaboration.
