> UTB HOSTS INTERNATIONAL PETROLEUM TECHNICAL WORKSHOP

UTB hosted a three-day technical workshop with research teams from Imperial College London (ICL), United Kingdom and The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney as part of an ongoing industry research project funded by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP). The workshop started on 30 August until 1 September 2022 at the Lecture Theatre 2 of the UTB Library Complex.

The event commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by a welcoming remark by the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Research) UTB, Yang Mulia Professor Dr Mohamed Hasnain Isa.

The workshop will discuss research insights into the problems of sand production in oil and gas wells. The funded research project was to investigate sand control techniques which started in May 2020 in collaboration with ICL to provide numerical modelling and simulation, as well as UNSW to develop laboratory facility. The new sand screen retention testing laboratory is built at UTB to provide local analytical capabilities for petroleum production.

UTB is committed to improving its industrial research outreach and developing new capabilities and resources that are critical to the sustainable development of engineering and technology in line with the fulfilment of Wawasan Brunei 2035.

Professor Stephen Tyson, the Principal Investigator of the project said,

“This project represents a transformational moment for UTB. We are showing that UTB and its research partners are capable of delivering the highest quality of research to local industry. We are employing and training young, Bruneian engineers and technicians and I am very proud of their achievements.”

UTB offers Undergraduate courses in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering and has opportunities for Postgraduate research across a range of petroleum and chemical related disciplines.
