29 June 2024 - Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) has the pleasure to host the National Robotic Competition, marking the culmination of the 5th annual Robotic Coding Conquest (RCC) 2024 competition.
Students participated in the 5th annual Robotic Coding Conquest (RCC) 2024 competition had the chance to compete in the National Robotic Competition with this year’s theme “Carbon Capture,” challenging students to develop innovative robotic solutions that contribute to environmental sustainability. Winners of this competition stand a chance to be selected to represent their country at the FIRST Global Robotic Challenge in Athens, Greece, this upcoming September.
The participants had the opportunity to pitch and demonstrate their projects showcasing their skills in computer vision, hardware integration and innovative thinking to develop an innovative forward-thinking solution for a real-world problem themed around “AI for future sustainability”. An excellent platform to demonstrate their creativity, technical skills and ability to work under pressure.
Subsequently, UTB concluded the outcome of the National Robotic Competition with the 5th annual Robotic Coding Conquest (RCC) 2024 award ceremony, celebrating a month of exceptional achievements and innovations in robotic coding. The event, held in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) 2024, took place at Lecture Theatre 2 at UTB.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Guest of Honour, Datin Paduka Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB. The ceremony was also attended by respected judges and notable guests.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, followed by a welcoming speech from Dr. Mohamad Saiful bin Haji Omar, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (External and Industry Relations). Dr. Saiful emphasised the RCC 2024 theme, "Strengthening the Innovation Ecosystem," and its role in fostering creativity, technical skills, and collaboration in the age of 4IR.
Mr. Hariharasudhan Ramani, General Manager for Digital Innovation at Shell India Markets Private Limited, delivered insights as a judge for the competition. He praised the participants' projects and discussed the impact of digital innovation.
Awards were then presented by the Guest of Honour to outstanding participants in the Robotics, IoT, and AI tracks, recognising their contributions to the field. This year the event featured competitions in the Rev Robotic Innovation, IoT Smart Home, AI and Informatics, Building Intelligent Machines, and the Microsoft ASEAN AI for Accessibility Hackathon.
As for the REV Robotic Innovation Challenge, the first-place winner was the team Bumble Bee, members were Muhd Aqil Muayyad bin Budiman (MSPSBS), Mohd Luqman Hakeem bin Mohd Zulkifli (SASHHB), Dalili Fasihah bin Haji Ayop (ITQSHHB) and Rabiatul Izzati Nabilah binti Mohd Azmi (SUAMPRIPAHS), while the second, third, and fourth places were secured by team Optimus Prime, members were Nur Haziyah Fatimah binti Abdul Azis (ITQSHHB), Mohd Danish Qusyairy bin Jafar Ali (MSPSBS), Nur Humairah binti Shamri Lai (SMTM) and Muhammad Faris (SASHHB), team Megatron, members were Muhammad Dzulkhairi bin Khairul (SASHHB), Nur Haadiya Syahirah binti Syahrul Nizam (UTQSHHB), Siti Nur Suratul Hafizah binti Saharin (SMSB) and Amirah Jalilah binti Haji Jahari (ITQSHHB), and team Starscream, member were Muhammad Hanif Hazlam bin Muhammad Ayyub (SASHHB), Nur Almaiyah binti Haji Mohammad Abas (SUAMPRIPAHS), Md Izzan Md Izzan Najdi bin Sahari (MSPSBS) and Md Faid bin Supian (SASHHB), respectively.
For the IoT Smart Home Competition, Nuraini Haziqah binti Zailani, from Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri, secured first place with her project title “IOT Home Security with Arduino”, while Dk Alya Syazani binti Pg Shahrin, from Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan with her project title “Smart Home Management using Arduino Uno R3”, was placed second and Muhammad Abdul Khair bin Haji Idris, from Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan took third place with his project title “Automatic Pet Feeder”.
The SUSS, Singapore teams took first and third place in the Microsoft AI for Accessibility Hackathon, and UTB’s SCIborg team took second place. The members of the team were Hazwan Arif Bin Kasbi, Khairil Haziq bin Haji Khairul Rijal, Chia Kal Pei and Lee Min Ku.
The first place in the AI and Informatics was awarded to team Geek Squad TM, followed by team FF@15 in second place and team Analytical Minds in third place.
In another AI track, Building Intelligent Machine, the first-place winner was awarded to team VisionTech from UTB, who earned a trip to attend the Changemakers of Tomorrow 2024 Event at the Shell Technology Centre Bangalore. Meanwhile, team Gesture Genius and team WildGuard AI secured the second and third places, respectively. The prizes under this track are sponsored by Shell Deepwater Borneo.
The winners of the REV Robotic Innovation competition will enter the final selection for a chance to represent Brunei at the FIRST Global competition in Athens, Greece.
RCC 2024 blended 4IR-themed competitions and immersive workshops, empowering students to unleash their creativity and problem-solving skills. These competitions are vital for enhancing technical skills, fostering collaboration, and promoting STEM education.
RCC has grown significantly over the last five years, attracting more industry partners dedicated to strengthening Brunei's innovation ecosystem. These partnerships provide invaluable opportunities for participants to connect with experts and gain practical experience. Through RCC and similar initiatives, UTB continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing Brunei's innovation ecosystem, equipping youth with skills essential for the 4th Industrial Revolution.
