Today marked the final day of the 3-day Konsortium Universiti Universitas Borneo (KUUB) Convention 2024, hosted by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), with the Open Science Seminar held at Lecture Theatre 2 of UTB.
The seminar commenced with opening remarks by Yang Mulia Dr Saiful Hj Omar, UTB’s Assistant Vice-Chancellor (External and Industry Relations), who welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of open science in breaking down barriers to knowledge sharing. Dr Saiful emphasised the need for transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in scientific research to accelerate discovery and innovation.
The first session, led by Yang Mulia IR Dr. Shaliza Ibrahim, focused on "Introduction to Open Science Principles." Dr. Shaliza provided a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts of open science, stressing the importance of making research data and outputs freely available to the scientific community and the public. Her presentation offered practical insights into how researchers can adopt open science practices in their work, fostering a culture of openness and inclusivity in research.
The second session, presented by Professor ChM Dr. Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman, addressed the topic of "Building Collaborative Research Networks." Professor Basyaruddin discussed the critical role of collaboration in scientific research, particularly in the context of addressing complex global challenges. He outlined strategies for building effective research networks that transcend geographical and disciplinary boundaries, enabling researchers to pool resources, share expertise, and drive impactful outcomes.
The seminar concluded with a visit to the ASEAN Traditional Textile Showcase at the Multipurpose Hall of the university, where participants had the opportunity to explore innovative textile technologies and sustainable practices in the region. The showcase provided a unique platform for dialogue between researchers and industry stakeholders, highlighting the potential for cross-sector collaboration in driving economic and environmental sustainability.
The KUUB Open Science Seminar marks an important step forward in the promotion of open science and collaborative research in Borneo and the broader ASEAN region. It reflects KUUB’s ongoing commitment to advancing scientific excellence and fostering a collaborative research environment that benefits both academia and society.
